Root Canal Treatment
Endodontic diagnosis and treatment occur in two basic scenarios.
In the first scenario, the emergency patient presents with pain and possibly swelling or with displaced, fractured, or avulsed teeth, such that urgent treatment is needed to relieve pain, prevent the spread of infection.
The second scenario is part of the restorative treatment plan when pulpal or periapical disease is detected but without symptoms.
The procedure involves removing the source of infection, cleaning the canals with files, and filling the canals with bacteriostatic material (gutta percha).
After treatment, the dentist does a core buildup, which involves placing prefabricated pins or amalgam into the filled canals and builds up on pins with resin or amalgam.
